NEWARK, NJ – Newark officials want to make sure that as affordable housing units become available in the city, residents will be able to access and locate them.

In order to better serve residents seeking affordable housing, city officials announced this week the launch of NewarkHousingSearch.com, an online housing site locator that enables prospective tenants to find affordable units in the city. The online tool, which can be used free of charge, provides users the ability to search listings along with a variety of potential specs including, but not limited to, photographs, bedroom size and types, rental costs, eligibility and requirements.

Officials noted that other useful information is included on the site such as special needs, neighborhood location and ward, seniors-only, distance from public transportation, on-site amenities, and neighborhood services such as hospitals and schools.

“I am committed to producing and preserving more affordable housing so that more individuals and families can establish or strengthen roots in Newark,” Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said. “Part of this mission is making it easier for people to search for the type of affordable housing they need. No matter where I go in Newark, people will approach me and ask for help in finding a home they can afford. This housing locator will help fill a gap that has long existed.”

The newly launched online tool complements Newark's efforts to increase availability and access to affordable housing in the city after a report issued last year by Rutgers Law School Center on Law, Inequality and Metropolitan Equity (CLiME) revealed that the city's housing stock falls short to provide affordable units for low-income residents by about 16,000 units. Following the release of the report, the mayor’s office teamed up with CLiME, the city Office of Economic and Housing Development and local partners to draft a multi-pronged approach to address what Baraka called “a growing problem in this town and a growing problem in this region.”
